The Deal Centre is well-used and much appreciated by the retired people of Deal and the surrounding district. Many of the services available are provided by a willing and dedicated group of volunteers. These volunteers perform many of the tasks that help to ensure that the Centre runs smoothly. They undertake a plethora of jobs from serving the meals, making tea and coffee  and chatting to Centre users. Volunteers also help with bathing as well as being on hand to provide a listening ear and cheerful chat – much valued by many of the visitors who live on their own. They are also involved in much-needed fundraising events from running raffles and quiz evenings to selling greetings cards and preserves.

More volunteers are needed, please contact the office for details on

Mrs Valerie Drew, a Trustee/Director and the Volunteers’ Representative, gives a personal view as to why she works as a volunteer at the Centre.

“When I retired after working in an office for over 28 years, and being used to dealing with people and their problems, I found I missed being useful to people and helping them, and the days without this were very long.  I joined the Deal Centre over nine years ago. I started by working on the Servery, making teas, coffee etc and talking to people.  Many people I had met before and it was so worthwhile talking to people and listening to any problems they may have, even to moaning about the weather; gradually I helped in the office dealing with booking lunches etc.  The Chief Officer also asked me to become the Volunteers’ Representative. I was asked to be Chairman of the Social Committee and did that for several years, organising a Fête, Christmas Bazaar, raffles and also the Tea Dance once a month and other social events.  I gain a lot of pleasure and satisfaction in doing the things I do at the Centre and feel that I am doing some good for people who look forward to these activities being put on for them.

I would not hesitate in recommending anyone who wishes to be a volunteer to offer their services for just a couple of hours a week.  It is a good feeling helping others.”
